Familiarize yourself with the basics of trusts. Learn about different types of trusts, such as revocable living trusts, irrevocable trusts, testamentary trusts, or special needs trusts. Understand the roles and responsibilities of the grantor (the person establishing the trust), trustee (the person managing the trust), and beneficiaries (those who will benefit from the trust).

Select a trustee who will be responsible for managing the trust assets and administering the trust according to your wishes. The trustee can be a family member, friend, or a professional trustee, such as a trust company or an attorney. Ensure the chosen trustee is trustworthy, capable, and willing to fulfill their duties.

Work with your estate planning attorney to draft the trust document. Specify the terms and conditions of the trust, including the purpose of the trust, asset distribution instructions, trustee powers and responsibilities, provisions for successor trustees, and any special provisions or restrictions you want to include.
